Should Christians Follow the Culture?
Every generation lives within a particular culture.
Culture influences the language we speak, the clothes we wear, the food we eat, the technology we use, and many of the customs that shape everyday life. Many of those things are morally neutral. The Bible does not require Christians in every nation to dress alike, eat the same foods, or share the same traditions.
But culture also shapes the way people think about right and wrong.
It influences ideas about marriage, family, sexuality, truth, justice, success, and even the meaning of life.
When culture speaks about these things, Christians must ask an important question:
Should our beliefs be shaped by society, or by God's Word?
The Bible consistently calls God's people to allow Him—not the surrounding culture—to determine how they live.
Paul wrote,
"Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind."(Romans 12:2)
Notice that Paul does not tell Christians to withdraw from the world.
He tells them not to be molded by its thinking.
Instead, their minds are to be renewed by God's truth.
Jesus prayed for His followers,
"They are not of the world, even as I am not of it." (John 17:16)
Yet He immediately added,
"As You sent Me into the world, I have sent them into the world." (John 17:18)
Christians are not called to escape society.
They are called to live faithfully within it.
Throughout the Bible we find God's people living in cultures that often rejected His ways.
Joseph served in Egypt.
Daniel lived in Babylon.
Esther lived in Persia.
The early Christians lived throughout the Roman Empire.
They respected governing authorities, loved their neighbors, and sought the good of those around them.
But when human authority conflicted with God's commands, they remained faithful to God.
The apostles declared,
"We must obey God rather than men." (Acts 5:29)
That principle has guided believers throughout history.
Christians should appreciate what is good in every culture.
They should show kindness and respect to all people.
They should seek peace whenever possible.
But they should never allow changing cultural values to replace the unchanging truth of God's Word.
Every generation faces new questions.
Every generation experiences new pressures.
But God's truth does not change.
The challenge for every Christian is not simply to ask,
"What is society saying?"
but,
"What has God said?"
That question has guided faithful believers for centuries.
It should continue to guide us today.
