Why Did God Create the World?
The Bible begins with one simple statement:
"In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth." (Genesis 1:1)
Everything that follows grows out of that truth.
God did not create the world because He was lonely or because He needed servants. The God who has existed from eternity lacks nothing. He is complete in Himself.
Instead, God created because it pleased Him to do so. He made a world that reflected His wisdom, His power, and His goodness.
When He created mankind, however, He did something unique.
"Then God said, 'Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness.'" (Genesis 1:26)
Human beings alone were created in God's image.
That does not mean we look like God physically. It means we were created to know Him, love Him, represent Him, and live in fellowship with Him.
From the very beginning, God's desire was to dwell with His people.
He placed Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, walked with them, provided everything they needed, and gave them meaningful work to do. Their relationship with God was one of trust, fellowship, and peace.
God also gave them a choice.
Love cannot be forced, and obedience has meaning only when there is the freedom to choose. Adam and Eve were free to obey God or to reject Him.
This reminds us that God's purpose has never been merely to create a world.
His purpose has always been to create a people who freely love Him and willingly live under His rule.
Everything we have studied in the previous courses points back to that truth.
The church is God's people.
The Kingdom is God's reign.
Worship is our response to God.
All of these grow naturally out of God's original purpose in creation.
The tragedy of Genesis 3 is not simply that Adam and Eve broke a command.
It is that sin broke the relationship God desired with His creation.
The rest of the Bible tells the story of how God acted to restore that relationship.
That is the story of redemption.
