How Did Christ Organize His Church?
Every organization needs leadership. The church is no exception. The question is not whether the church should be organized, but how Christ organized it.
The New Testament begins with one simple truth:
Christ is the Head of the church.
Paul wrote,
"He is the head of the body, the church." (Colossians 1:18)
No human leader occupies that position. Christ alone is the Head, and every Christian is called to submit to His authority.
Within local congregations, the New Testament speaks of elders (also called overseers or shepherds). These men were appointed to care for the spiritual well-being of the congregation, teaching God's Word, protecting the flock, and leading by example rather than by force (Acts 14:23; 20:28; 1 Peter 5:1-3).
The New Testament also describes the work of deacons. These servants helped meet practical needs within the congregation, allowing the elders to concentrate on their spiritual responsibilities. Like elders, deacons were expected to meet qualifications that reflected Christian character and faithful service (1 Timothy 3:8-13).
Evangelists also played an important role. Men such as Timothy and Titus preached the gospel, taught the churches, and helped strengthen new congregations. Their work centered on proclaiming God's Word and encouraging Christians to remain faithful (2 Timothy 4:1-5; Titus 1:5).
Yet the work of the church does not belong only to elders, deacons, or evangelists.
Every Christian has a place in Christ's body.
Every member has abilities that can be used in serving God and encouraging others. A healthy congregation is one in which every believer contributes according to the gifts and opportunities God has provided.
One feature of the New Testament deserves special attention.
Each congregation had its own leadership. The New Testament does not describe one congregation ruling over another or a single human leader exercising authority over the entire church. Local churches worked together in love, but each remained responsible to Christ, its only Head.
This simple pattern keeps our attention where it belongs.
Christ rules His church.
His Word guides His people.
His servants lead by teaching, example, and humble service.
When every member respects that arrangement, the church is strengthened, Christ is honored, and God receives the glory.
