GOD HAS LEFT THE BUILDING
Study 1 — What Did the Torn Temple Curtain Mean?
Years ago, when an Elvis Presley concert ended, an announcer would sometimes tell the crowd:
“Elvis has left the building.”
The message was simple. Stop standing around waiting for another appearance. He isn't coming back tonight. Go home.
We are borrowing that familiar expression to make a much more serious point:
God has left the building.
The temple in Jerusalem once stood at the center of Israel's relationship with God. God chose to place His presence among His people there. But even then, He was separated from them. Walls, courts, priests, sacrifices—and finally a great curtain—stood between sinful people and the Most Holy Place.
Then Jesus died.
“At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.”
— Matthew 27:51
God tore the curtain.
And He never told anyone to sew it back together.
The message is not, “Go home. God is gone.”
The message is:
Come to Christ.
But don't try to come through a system God Himself has brought to its appointed end.
Don't wait for another temple.
Don't wait for another earthly priesthood.
Don't wait for animal sacrifices to begin again.
The sacrifice has already been offered.
The High Priest has already entered.
The curtain has already been torn.
And God hasn't abandoned His people.
Something far greater has happened.
God has left the building—and moved into His people.
“Don't you know that you yourselves are God's temple and that God's Spirit dwells in your midst?”
— 1 Corinthians 3:16
And even that is not the end of the story.
The Bible begins with God and humanity together in a Garden. Genesis 3 brings sin, separation, fear, death and the curse. The rest of Scripture tells the story of what God does about it.
When we finally reach Revelation 21–22, Satan is defeated. Death is gone. The curse is gone. The tree of life is back. God's people see His face.
And John notices something remarkable:
“I did not see a temple in the city, because the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple.”
— Revelation 21:22
No temple.
There isn't one because there is no longer any need for one.
No curtain.
No barrier.
No separation.
God dwells openly with His people.
Genesis 3 has been undone.
We are back where the story began—with God and His people together.
And this time, Satan will never disturb it again.
