Who Was Revelation Originally Written To?
Like every other book of the New Testament, Revelation had its first readers.
John begins by writing,
"John, to the seven churches in the province of Asia." (Revelation 1:4)
Later he is instructed,
"Write on a scroll what you see and send it to the seven churches..." (Revelation 1:11)
Those churches were real congregations located in what is now western Turkey.
They were:
Ephesus
Smyrna
Pergamum
Thyatira
Sardis
Philadelphia
Laodicea
Each church faced its own challenges.
Some remained faithful despite persecution.
Others tolerated false teaching.
Some had become spiritually complacent.
Others had abandoned the love they had shown when they first believed.
In chapters two and three, Jesus speaks directly to each congregation.
His words are practical, personal, and immediate.
He commends their faithfulness.
He rebukes their failures.
He calls them to repentance.
And He encourages them to remain faithful, no matter what they suffer.
These letters remind us that Revelation was not written as an abstract book of future predictions.
It was written to strengthen real Christians facing real trials.
Many believers were experiencing opposition because they confessed Jesus as Lord.
Some had already suffered imprisonment.
Others would face persecution and even death.
Revelation assured them that their suffering was not meaningless.
Christ was reigning.
He knew their circumstances.
He walked among His churches.
And He would ultimately triumph over every enemy.
That original setting is essential to understanding the rest of the book.
Before asking how Revelation applies to our own generation, we should first ask how its first readers would have understood John's visions.
Only then can we appreciate the timeless message that continues to encourage Christians today.
Although Revelation was first written to seven churches in Asia, its message extends far beyond them.
Every generation of believers faces its own challenges.
Every generation needs the same assurance.
Jesus Christ is Lord.
He knows His people.
He walks among His churches.
And those who remain faithful will share in His final victory.
