Why Does the Bible Call the Church the Bride of Christ?
The New Testament describes the church in many ways. It is the body of Christ, the family of God, the kingdom of God, and the temple of the Holy Spirit. It is also called the Bride of Christ.
Why did God choose that picture?
Because nothing illustrates Christ's love for His people more beautifully than the love between a husband and wife.
Paul wrote,
"Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her." (Ephesians 5:25)
Christ did not merely teach the church.
He gave Himself for her.
His love was not based on what the church had done for Him. It was a sacrificial love that sought her good above His own.
Paul continues by saying that Christ's purpose was
"that He might sanctify and cleanse her...that He might present her to Himself a glorious church."(Ephesians 5:26-27)
The church belongs to Christ because He purchased her with His own blood (Acts 20:28). She is precious to Him, and He desires that she be holy, faithful, and devoted to Him.
The book of Revelation uses the same picture when it speaks of
"the marriage of the Lamb." (Revelation 19:7)
And later John sees
"the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband." (Revelation 21:2)
These images remind us that the relationship between Christ and His people is not merely legal or organizational.
It is personal.
It is loving.
It is permanent.
The picture of a bride also calls for faithfulness.
Just as a husband and wife are to be devoted to one another, the church is called to remain faithful to Christ. The New Testament repeatedly warns against abandoning Him or allowing other loyalties to take His place.
This image completes the beautiful picture we have been studying.
The church is:
Christ's body—because He is our Head.
God's family—because He is our Father.
God's kingdom—because Christ is our King.
God's temple—because His Spirit dwells among us.
Christ's bride—because He loved us and gave Himself for us.
Each picture teaches something different.
Together they help us understand what God intended His church to be.
