What Is the Mission of the Church?
Every organization has a purpose. Before we ask what the church should do, we should first ask:
Why did Christ establish His church?
Jesus answered that question before He returned to heaven.
"Go therefore and make disciples of all nations...teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you." (Matthew 28:19-20)
The church exists to make disciples.
It is called to proclaim the gospel, teach God's Word, and help believers grow into mature followers of Christ.
The book of Acts shows this mission in action. As the gospel spread, people were baptized, churches were established, and Christians devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching, fellowship, the Lord's Supper, and prayer (Acts 2:42). Everywhere the church went, the message of Christ remained at its center.
The New Testament also teaches that the church is to strengthen believers.
Paul explains that Christ gave different gifts to His people
"for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ."(Ephesians 4:11-12)
The church is not only concerned with bringing people to Christ.
It is also concerned with helping them grow in faith, knowledge, and service.
The early church also cared for those in need.
Christians willingly shared with one another, and local churches assisted needy saints during times of hardship (Acts 4:32-35; 2 Corinthians 8-9). These acts of love demonstrated the compassion of Christ and strengthened the unity of God's family.
When we put these passages together, a clear picture emerges.
The church's mission includes:
Proclaiming the gospel.
Teaching God's Word.
Building up believers.
Caring for God's people.
Everything the church does should support that mission.
The church is not a political movement.
It is not a social club.
It is not an entertainment center.
Its purpose is to glorify God by leading people to Christ, helping Christians mature in their faith, and demonstrating His love through lives of faithful service.
When the church remains focused on that mission, it becomes exactly what Christ intended it to be.
